Live casino basics: baccarat, roulette and blackjack

Live dealer tables stream real cards and real wheels to your screen. Here's how the three most popular games work, what the main bets cost, and how to join a table with confidence.

Every live table shows its minimum and maximum bets before you join.

Live casino tables combine online convenience with a real dealer. Cards are dealt and wheels are spun on camera, and you place bets through an on-screen layout during a short betting window. The rules are the same as in a land-based casino, so a few minutes with the basics goes a long way.

How a live table works

Each round opens a betting window, usually shown with a countdown timer. Place your chips before it closes; late bets aren't accepted. The dealer then deals or spins, and results are settled automatically.

Every table shows its stake limits. Choose one where the minimum bet is small compared with your budget, so a few losing rounds don't end the session.

Baccarat

In baccarat you bet on which hand will finish closest to 9: Player or Banker. You can also bet on a Tie. There are no decisions to make after you bet, because extra cards are drawn automatically under fixed rules.

Cards 2 to 9 count at face value, aces count as 1, and tens and picture cards count as 0. Only the last digit of a total counts, so 7 + 8 = 15 is worth 5.

The Banker bet has the lowest house edge, which is why winning Banker bets usually pay 0.95 to 1 after a 5% commission. The Tie pays more but carries a far higher edge. “No-commission” tables reduce the Banker payout in specific situations instead, so check the table rules.

Roulette

Roulette is about predicting where the ball lands. Inside bets cover single numbers or small groups and pay more; outside bets, such as red or black, win more often but pay even money.

The wheel matters. European roulette has a single zero (37 pockets) and a house edge of 2.70%. American roulette adds a double zero (38 pockets), which raises the edge to 5.26%. Where both are offered, the single-zero wheel costs less over time.

Some live variants add random multipliers to certain numbers and lower the standard payouts to fund them. The table's paytable shows exactly what changes.

Blackjack

In blackjack you try to beat the dealer's hand without going over 21. You choose to hit, stand, double down or split, so your decisions affect the result.

With basic strategy, a chart of the mathematically best play for every hand, the house edge under common rules is roughly 0.5%. Check that blackjack pays 3 to 2: tables paying 6 to 5 add about 1.4 percentage points to the house edge. Insurance, offered when the dealer shows an ace, carries a much higher edge than the main bet.

Tips for your first session

  • Watch a few rounds before betting to learn the pace and the layout.
  • Pick a fixed stake per round that fits your budget, and don't raise it to recover losses.
  • Use a stable connection. Once a bet is accepted, a dropped stream doesn't cancel it.
  • Keep the chat friendly. Dealers and other players are real people.
  • Side bets are optional and usually carry a higher house edge than the main bets.
“The rules are simple and the edge is fixed. Your stake is the one thing you control.”
Live play moves fast

Rounds can take under a minute, so spending adds up faster than it feels. Decide your session budget first. See setting limits that work.
