Limits work best when you set them before you start, not halfway through a session when emotions run high. The habits below are simple, but they make the biggest difference.
Decide your budget first
Set a budget for the week or month from money left after bills, savings and family commitments: an amount you could lose completely without it hurting. Treat it as the price of entertainment, like a cinema ticket. When it's gone, you're done until the next period.
Keep gambling money separate from everyday money, and never use credit or borrowed money to play.
Limits that hold up in practice
- Time: set a phone alarm for the end of your session and stop when it rings.
- Deposits: if your account offers deposit limits, set them on a calm day, before you need them.
- Breaks: step away every 30 to 60 minutes. A short break interrupts autopilot.
- Wins: decide in advance what you'll do with a win, such as withdrawing half.
- Mood: don't play when you're stressed, upset, tired or have been drinking.
Why chasing losses doesn't work
Chasing means raising your stakes or playing longer to win back money you've lost. It feels logical, but every bet is independent and the house edge stays the same. Bigger stakes only increase how much you can lose, and how fast. Accept the loss as the cost of the session, and stop.
Warning signs
Gambling may be becoming a problem if you notice any of these:
- Spending more money or time than you planned, more often.
- Borrowing money, selling things or missing bills to gamble.
- Hiding gambling from family or friends.
- Gambling to escape stress, loneliness or low mood.
- Feeling restless or irritable when you try to cut back.
- Chasing losses, or thinking about the next session most of the time.
