Asian handicap explained: every line, with examples

Asian handicap removes the draw by giving one team a head start. Here's how every type of line settles, including the quarter lines that split your stake, with worked examples in ringgit.

The handicap line and the price are two separate numbers. Read both before you bet.

A standard 1X2 football market has three outcomes: home win, draw and away win. Asian handicap cuts that to two by adding a virtual goal start, so the stronger team has to win by more and the weaker team gets a cushion. Because the two sides end up close to evenly matched, the prices on each are usually near even money, which is why it's one of the most popular football markets in Asia.

How to read a handicap line

The line is added to the final score of the team you back. A minus line means your team gives goals away; a plus line means it receives them. If the home team is โˆ’1, its score counts as one goal fewer. The away team's matching line is +1.

Quarter lines can be written two ways: as 0.25, 0.75 or 1.25, or as a pair such as 0/0.5, 0.5/1 or 1/1.5. Both mean the same thing. Next to the line is the price, shown in decimal, Hong Kong or Malay odds. The line decides whether you win; the price decides how much.

Level and half-goal lines

  • 0 (level ball, or draw no bet): if your team wins, you win. If the match is drawn, your stake is refunded. If your team loses, you lose.
  • โˆ’0.5: your team must win. A draw loses.
  • +0.5: your team must win or draw.
  • โˆ’1.5: your team must win by two goals or more.
  • +1.5: your team must win, draw or lose by no more than one goal.

Half-goal lines can never land exactly, so the bet always wins or loses in full. There's no refund.

Whole-goal lines

On a whole line, a refund is possible. It happens whenever the handicap makes the adjusted score level.

  • โˆ’1: a win by two or more wins. A win by exactly one is refunded. A draw or a loss loses.
  • +1: a win or a draw wins. A loss by exactly one is refunded. A loss by two or more loses.
  • โˆ’2 and +2 follow the same logic with a two-goal margin.

Quarter lines: your stake is split in two

A quarter line splits your stake equally across the two nearest lines. A RM100 bet on โˆ’0.75 is really RM50 on โˆ’0.5 and RM50 on โˆ’1. Each half settles on its own, which creates two extra results: half won (one half wins, the other is refunded) and half lost (one half is refunded, the other loses).

  • โˆ’0.25 (0 / โˆ’0.5): a draw is half lost.
  • +0.25 (0 / +0.5): a draw is half won.
  • โˆ’0.75 (โˆ’0.5 / โˆ’1): a win by exactly one is half won.
  • +0.75 (+0.5 / +1): a loss by exactly one is half lost.
  • โˆ’1.25 (โˆ’1 / โˆ’1.5): a win by exactly one is half lost.

The table shows every common line against every result.

Worked examples in ringgit

These examples use made-up prices to show the arithmetic.

RM100 on the home team โˆ’0.75 at 1.90 (decimal).

  • Home wins 2โ€“0: both halves win. You get RM190 back, a RM90 profit.
  • Home wins 1โ€“0: RM50 on โˆ’0.5 wins and returns RM95; RM50 on โˆ’1 is refunded. You get RM145 back, a RM45 profit.
  • Draw or home loss: both halves lose. You lose RM100.

RM100 on the away team +0.25 at 1.95.

  • Away wins: you get RM195 back, a RM95 profit.
  • Draw: RM50 on 0 is refunded; RM50 on +0.5 wins and returns RM97.50. You get RM147.50 back, a RM47.50 profit.
  • Away loses: you lose RM100.

Rules that catch people out

  • Full time means 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs normally don't count unless the market says so.
  • In-play bets may ignore earlier goals. Many sportsbooks settle running-ball Asian handicap only on goals scored after your bet is accepted, treating the score at that moment as 0โ€“0. Others use the full-match score. Check before you bet live.
  • First-half lines settle on the half-time score only.
  • Abandoned or postponed matches are settled under each sportsbook's own rules, which differ.
  • A big handicap isn't a safe bet. The line reflects the bookmaker's view of the gap between the teams, plus its margin, on both sides.
โ€œThe line decides whether you win. The price decides how much.โ€
Check the bet slip

Before you confirm, the slip shows the line, the price and your potential return. Lines move, so make sure it still shows the one you wanted. Bet only what you've set aside: see setting limits that work.
